It is well established anatomically and physiologically that there are two hemispheres of the human brain. The cerebrum is divided into right and left hemispheres by a longitudinal fissure. The corpus callosum is the largest of the cerebral commissures this fissure. Its fibers diverge into all parts of the cerebral cortex1 thus establishing a neurological pathway for communication between the two hemispheres.

The function of the corpus callosum and anterior commissure is to transfer thoughts, memories, training and other information between the two cerebral hemispheres. Fibers in the corpus callosum provide abundant bi-directional neural connections between most of the respective cortical areas of the two hemispheres, except for the anterior portions of the temporal lobes; these temporal areas, including the amygdala, are interconnected by fibers that pass through the anterior commissure.2

Functional differences between the left and right hemispheres have been known since 1865 when Peirre Paul Broca 3 observed that damage to the speech center on the left half of the brain led to inability to vocalize, but damage to the right side did not result in the same loss.

In 1874 Carl Wernicke 4 discovered a speech center in the left hemisphere, now known as the Wernicke area. Continued research has confirmed that most individuals use the left hemisphere for verbalization, including speech, the formation of logical sentences, and the

recognition of words.

A considerable amount of evidence exists that the right hemisphere is spatial and tonal, allowing evaluation of shapes and also appears to have intuitive and parapsychological function. 5

The left hemisphere is used essentially for logical and numerical thinking and problem solving. The right hemisphere is used essentially for music, art, imagination and other nonlogical thinking and problem solving. Ornstein and Bakan 4 presented a set of dichotomies of the characteristics of the two sides of the brain:

Left Brain – Right Body, Logical, Mathematical, Rational, Reasonable, Practical, Linear, Masculine, Intellectual, Argument, Negative, Time, History

Right Brain - Left body, Non Logical, Tonal, Nonsensible, Unpredictable, Nonpractical, Spatial, Feminine, Intuitive, Experience, Positive, Eternity, Timelessness. Under some circumstances, clairvoyant, clairaudient, clairessential

Bandler and Grinder 5 observed that eye movement has clues as to how the individual is accessing the brain, to better understand the person’s psychological aspects. Their observation is as follows:

Eyes up, right - Visual constructed images.

Eyes right - Auditory constructed sounds or words.

Eyes down, right - Kinesthetic feelings (also smell and taste)

Eyes up, left - Visual remembered images

Eyes left - Auditory remembered sounds or words

Eyes down, left - Auditory sounds or words
